Re: Hadeel
Let see more in detail the construction of l'imparfait in arabic and french.
The present / مضارع express a no-ending action, means an action without limit.
There is three way to express unlimited action in arabic :
a. adding ي before a verb, example : يفعل
b. adding a ي after the second radicale in a noun : فَعِيلٌ
c. all pattern which have a كسرة on the second radical (as the pattern فَعِيل above, or مُفَعِّلٌ etc.). These pattern are called active participle (means non ending action-doer).
Example whan we say الرَّحِمان and الرَّحِيم : the ي express a repetition, mercifull again and again. The Mercifull of Allah don't have end.
Now, compare to french. The active particple can be associated to the french participe présent. The mark is not ي or كسرة as in arabic, but -ant.
Le participe présent is qualifying the action do by an agent. It may be :
-un participe présent (ex.: faisant)
-un nom (ex.: un étudiant)
-un adjectif (plaisant)
In this sentence :
We have a verb conjugate, but it is a participe présent in french. Note that in arabic, the pronoun in يَعْمَلُونَ make the connection with the previous كانوا as auxiliary + pronoun. In french, this is not the same connection between the participe présent and a pronoun :
La fille mangeant dans la voiture...
See, the le participe présent comes for the noun, in the way of an adjective. This example above is incomplete sentence, so :
La fille mangeant dans la voiture attend ses parents.
If fact we have 2 phrases :
1. The girl is eating
2. The girl is waiting for her parents.
In arabic, "mangeant" denote a حال means an action, a statement occuring in another action.
المدرّسُ is doing 2 actions, but the second one يحمِلُ is subordinated to the first one يدخل.
> Le professeur entre
> Le professeur porte -des livres- (transitive verb)
In french, we could say :
> Le professeur entre en portant des livres. Gérondif = action occuring while another main one.
> Le professeur portant des livres entre. Participe présent = description of the state of the noun.
So the présent or the participe présent denote a non-ending action.
دخلَ المدرّسُ الفصلَ وَهو يحمِلُ كتبًا كثيرةً
Now, the verb "enter" is in the past, while the حال still being int the participe présent :
Le professeur est entré en portant des livres.
Portant is not the main action of the sentence. The main action is دخل and the time of the action is in the past. So "portant" or هو يحمِلُ express and non-ending action >>> in the past because the main action of the sentence is in the past. This is the imparfait !
The sentence could be : Le professeur est entré ; il portait des livres.
Il portait des livres can be understood as : Il était portant des livres. >>> était = كان.
Now you see why there is an auxiliary for imparfait in arabic, and omitted one in french.
Exercice
Few step in this exercise.
First : build 3 separated sentences denoting 3 actions you see in this pics :

Re: Hadeel
L'exercice :

2- L'homme marche sur l'herbe.
3- Les gens regardent l'homme.

Placement of حال or how to build حال in french
Très bien !
Hadeel a écrit:
L'exercice :
1- Un homme tient un drapeau.
2- L'homme marche sur l'herbe.
3- Les gens regardent l'homme.
In this 3 sentences (complete ones) you include another noun and agent : les gens.
To go ahead, and symplify the exercise, we'll place only 1 doer for all actions :
1- Un homme tient un drapeau.
2- L'homme marche sur l'herbe.
3- L'homme porte un chapeau.
These are 3 complete sentences. Now, we'll join them a make only 1 sentence. We'll learn the placement of حال or how to build حال in french :
2 tools : le participe présent and le gérondif
> Le participe présent (and all participles) allow to describe a situation of a doer.
> Le gérondif work in the same time of another action. It is built with the "manner-preposition" en* (بِ) and the present participle form of the verb, example : parler > en parlant.
* en means also في.
1- Un homme tient un drapeau.
2- L'homme marche sur l'herbe.
3- L'homme porte un chapeau.
Changing all verbs toward their form to le participe présent and le gérondif :
Participe présent
1- tenant un drapeau...
2- marchant sur l'herbe...
3- portant un chapeau...
Gérondif
1- en tenant un drapeau...
2- en marchant sur l'herbe...
3- en portant un chapeau...
Now, all these are not complete sentences. We build sentences :
Participe présent
As we see, un homme tenant un drapeau is the whole nominal group subject for the verb marcher. This way, tenant un drapeau is a description for the noun homme.
Gérondif
The doer for tenir and marcher is the same. The meaning : this man is holding a flag and in the same time (en marchant) he is walking.
See ? No need to repeat the subjet (Il tient, il marche).
Exercice
Build sentences using for each one :
> L'agent, le participe présent, le verbe (main action occuring).
> L'agent, le verbe (main action occuring), le gérondif.
Main action
1- Un homme tient un drapeau.
2- L'homme marche sur l'herbe.
3- L'homme porte un chapeau.
Participe présent
1- tenant un drapeau...
2- marchant sur l'herbe...
3- portant un chapeau...
Gérondif
1- en tenant un drapeau...
2- en marchant sur l'herbe...
3- en portant un chapeau...
There are many combinations. You can write them all.

Read again the example :
Participe présent
As we see, un homme tenant un drapeau is the whole nominal group subject for the verb marcher. This way, tenant un drapeau is a description for the noun homme.
Gérondif
The doer for tenir and marcher is the same. The meaning : this man is holding a flag and in the same time (en marchant) he is walking.
See ? No need to repeat the subjet (Il tient, il marche).
Point out the main action in these two sentences :
Un homme tient un drapeau en marchant sur l'herbe.
